Knowing God
Knowing God
Daniel 11:32 says “……but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits”
God desires to be known by His people. He sent His son Jesus Christ to reveal himself to men.
The bible says in John 17:3 “and this is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”.
God desires that all men know him and have an encounter with him more than they desire. That’s the reason why He sent His only begotten son, to create a way for us to come back to Him. Imagine, God so much cared about his relationship with men, such that he sent his sinless son to die, to make a way for men to return to him. Be encouraged, brothers and sisters. God is waiting for you to come back to him.
Knowing God comes out of a deliberate action by men, with guaranteed results. God assures us that if we seek him with all our hearts, we will find him. (Jeremiah 29:13). To seek means to attempt to find or desire to obtain. God wants us to make an effort to find him and know him. Many believers are waiting for a touch from God. But the truth of the matter is that God is waiting for them to touch him. When we touch God, we draw from his power. For instance, the woman who had the issue of blood for 12 years risked death to touch Jesus and receive her healing (Luke 8:44,46) God is waiting for people who are so desperate to know Him such that they will make every effort to touch him to know his power. God assures us that if we seek him with all our hearts, we will find him.
In addition to knowing him, God wants to reveal his secrets to those who find him. It is written is Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV) “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” There are hidden secrets which are only reserved for those who know God.
If we do not give up, we will know the Lord. Knowing God is not for the faint hearted nor for those who give up at any resistance. It’s not for those who can easily be discouraged. It’s for those who are courageous and determined to obtain. Paul says to Timothy “endure hardness as a good soldier of Christ Jesus “2 Timothy 2:2. Like the widow in Luke 18 who troubled the unjust judge and never gave up until she got justice, we should never give up in our pursuit to know God. We are guaranteed that we shall know God ‘if we follow on to know the Lord’ Hosea 6:3.
There are great benefits in knowing God. Those who know Him are strong and do exploits (Daniel 11:32). Most believers are powerless and live lives of defeat by the enemy because of lack of power. We need power to overcome sin and live a victorious Christian life. God is not going to throw this power on you because you are called a Christian or you go to church. You need to seek him and know him to receive power to overcome the enemy. That power is available to every believer today and will enable you to do great works for him.
Further to that knowing God results in a change of your character and associations. One of the significant noticeable marks of knowing God is that your character changes. When one spends more time in God’s presence they are transformed and become more like him. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says “…beholding in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord”
In spite of the glory reserved for those who know God, many people do not know him. Many do not believe that they can know him neither do they make an effort to seek him. The unfortunate thing is that there is a penalty for those who die without knowing God. It is written in 2 Thessalonians 1:8 ‘in a flame of fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God …”. Jesus further underlines this in Matthew 7:21-23 when he describes the scene on the day of judgment. He says calling him Lord or casting demons or doing great wonders in his name without knowing him will not qualify someone to go to heaven. In fact, the Lord will say to those people ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ It’s scary and fearful that those among us who do not know the Lord are at risk of going to hell. But be of good courage, you still have an opportunity today, to come to him. God is here to help you; I just encourage you to draw close to him by calling upon his name.
Maybe some of you are saying, ‘I don’t have a desire to know God’. The bible says a man cannot receive anything unless it’s given him from above (John 3:27). You can ask God to give you a heart and a desire to know him. Jeremiah 24:7 says, ‘Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.’
The first step to knowing God involves dedicating your life to God by asking Jesus to come into your heart and fill you with the Holy Spirit.(go to our salvation page)
Pray to God right now with your whole heart and say ‘Lord I repent of not seeking you. Give me a heart that desires to know you. Lord remove from me a rebellious heart. Father remove from me a stony heart. Give me a repentant heart that hungers and thirsts after you Lord’.
Make this your daily prayer until the Holy Spirit creates a hunger for his presence in you. Read your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding of the Word, pray everyday, seek Him through fasting and praying, seek godly counsel and teaching as you are led by the Holy Spirit. Do not give up until you find the Lord.
